You’re a deep feeler and thinker… and that’s a good thing.

Online therapy for Highly Sensitive People

Do you ever wish you could turn down the volume… on the world?

Are you…

  • Easily overwhelmed by noise, lights, textures, other peoples’ energy? Or your own internal state, or external demands?

  • Overstimulated, overwhelmed, burnt out, often because you’re a lightning rod for others’ emotions or have no “shields”?

  • Intensely empathetic, sometimes to the point where you don’t know whether your feelings even belong to you?

  • Frustrated with how unjust or unfair the world feels? Passionate about wanting things to be better, but intimidated or stuck with impostor syndrome when you try to help make that happen?

  • Pathologically incapable of putting yourself first, or not sure if you even deserve to have needs in the first place?

  • Yearn for deep connections, even if you don’t feel comfortable being vulnerable, or people don’t meet you on that level?

  • So tired of being told you’re “too sensitive”, “overly emotional”, “need to get a thicker skin”, or “too much” (even if you secretly worry it might be true)?

You’re ready to embrace your finely tuned body and brain.

How therapy works

Your sensitivity is your superpower, whether you know it or not.

Being a Highly Sensitive Person (sometimes called Sensory Processing Sensitivity) is NOT proof that you’re broken or unworthy — it’s a personality trait and a nervous system style that deserves to be honored and understood. However, I know that the world can be, shall we say, LESS than supportive or kind to us sensitive types, and we often receive messaging that who we are isn’t ok.

Therapy with me doesn’t treat your high sensitivity, but it will empower you to embrace the positive aspects, manage the less pleasant parts, and build your toolkit and resources so that being sensitive doesn’t feel so burdensome.

Therapy for HSPs can help you…

  • Understand yourself better and advocate for yourself and your personality with others.

  • Create healthy self-compassion and self-care routines to soothe your nervous system and reduce overwhelm from sensory overload.

  • Increase “energetic boundaries”: you’ll learn what’s yours, what’s not, and how to protect your emotional energy, especially in social situations.

  • Build emotional resilience, navigate intense emotions, and cope more effectively with life’s challenges.

  • Empower you to express yourself authentically and live a life aligned with your values.

Frequently asked questions about therapy for HSPs

FAQs

  • No. HSP is considered a temperament or personality trait, and a nervous system style - the trait is shown across many animal species as well! About 10-15% of people seem to have a highly sensitive nervous system. Some call HSP by the name “sensory processing sensitivity”, because of the way HSPs often experience the world through their five senses.

The jury is out as to whether HSP is its own form of neurodivergence, or if there is overlap between other forms such as autism, ADHD or sensory processing disorder. Let’s explore what resonates most for you.

  • Elaine Aron, one of the prominent researchers of the HSP trait, has a self-test online, which may help you identify some of the facets of being highly sensitive. This self-test can be found here — it’s a great place to start!
